History of Limousine

The History of Limousines

The history of limousines actually started in 1902 in a French region known as Limousin. In these particular limousines, the driver sat outside in a covered compartment of the vehicle.
In the early history of limousines, It was simply considered a “luxury sedan” because it had a partition that separated passengers from the driver and had a longer wheelbase than ordinary.

It wasn’t until 1928 that the first stretch limo actually appeared to transport famous bands and their equipment. In the 1930s the limousine industry started booming, being a luxury means of transportation and a sightseeing vessel. When the film industry in Hollywood started to boom, limos began being used by celebrities as the primary option of arrival to movie premieres and events.

It was seen as the perfect way of showing others that you were a success in the industry. With this came the demand for longer limos such as six-door ones. They also began being used for funerals as well.

Today, there are types types of limousines: traditional and stretch. People including the President of the U.S. use limos to get around. Limousines are now commonly used for events such as:

  • Weddings
  • Birthdays
